Below you will find photos and stories from the Catalina Island Fire. DCS was active for 12 days. This was the longest activation most of our members can remember.

For the next six days, members rotated shifts at the County Emergency Operations Center.  After all was done, over 4500 acres had destroyed a portion of the island.  DCS was happy to help.

“The citizens placed thank you signs all over the city and were applauding efforts as you moved around town,” said DCS RDT Member Andy Veek WA6KIK.

DCS Member Rick Norwood KD6KHJ said that he was “impressed by the efforts of their local CERT Team,” who he found out trained once a month under the supervision of LASD Deputy Burt Lyon.  “It makes a difference. We do it ourselves,” Norwood added.

Just like those citizens of Avalon, DCS Members volunteer to step up when called and do it with pride and professionalism.  Agency heads not familiar with DCS shake their head when they find out that they are all volunteers, using their own personal equipment and funding.

When all else failed; DCS Amatuer Radio Operators showed up as a team.

DCS thanks the City of Avalon for their hospitality during our deployment.

Please visit Catalina Island and enjoy the little gem 27 miles off the coast of Long Beach, California.
