Below you will find information about the recognition bestowed upon the members of the Disaster Communications Service based at the Carson Sheriff Station on February 27, 2008. Individual and group awards were presented from the State of California, County of Los Angeles, the Carson Sheriff Station Support Foundation and the City of Carson.

The Carson Sheriff Station DCS members would like to thank their coordinator Sgt. Vikki Panzone and Captain Todd Rogers for their support and leadership and thanks to Senator Mark Ridley-Thomas, LA County Supervisor Burke, the City of Carson, the LA Sheriff's Department, Carson Station and the CSSSF, its members and major donors for the recognition bestowed upon DCS.

The following speech was delivered at the 2nd Annual Distinguished Service Awards about the Carson Station Disaster Communications Service Volunteers, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department:

"The Carson Station Disaster Communications Service ( DCS ) Volunteers are a cadre of Ham Radio operators who provide communication links in the event that more traditional communication systems are disabled due to natural or manmade disasters. They also form the core of a countywide Rapid Deployment Team.

During 2007, 27 Carson Station DCS volunteers provided 7,986 service hours as they participated in a wide range of planned and emergent events. For example, they participated in bicycle races through mountainous terrain, tactical alerts due to civil unrest, funerals for fallen deputy sheriffs, and the fires that plagued Southern California. Members of the Rapid Deployment Team spent 5 days on Catalina Island where they served as the primary means of communication between the island and the mainland until telephone systems were restored.

The service provided by the Carson Station DCS volunteers saved the taxpayers of Los Angeles County approximately $319,440 but more importantly, they selflessly provided an invaluable service that is a critical component to the safety of our communities and families. We are very fortunate to have them."
